The James House Project
The James House Project began in 2015 and is an initiative that utilizes owned, leased, or managed single-family residences for the purpose of increasing the number of foster homes and emergency housing in communities severely impacted by the foster care crisis. The lack of foster homes across the state has created a complex child placement issue that results in children lingering in state care, poor reunification rates, trauma, increased costs to the state, and growing numbers of families in the system. The James House Project is designed to keep children “at home” in their communities so that the family has the opportunity to work toward reunification without the hindrances of long-distance placements and the downward spiral it creates.
The James House Project utilizes a model of “supportive” living whereby families have access to resources and supports that allow one parent to focus full-time on the needs and care of the children with whom they are entrusted. This initiative also provides for short-term emergency housing for families that have suffered a catastrophic event that may result in state intervention. Criteria for this type of assistance is very specific and is only for those needing a very short-term solution for their situation.
